Memory Connections

A scrapbooking program for hospice patients. Over about two months, each patient builds a personal scrapbook of their life, with volunteers working right alongside them.

Overview

I volunteer at Adoration Hospice, helping with patient activities like bingo and letter writing. I developed Memory Connections there as a longer project patients could work on over several weeks, built around their own stories.

How a session works

  • Volunteers sit with small groups of 3–6 patients at each table
  • Patients build their pages from family photos and magazine cutouts
  • For patients without photos, we take Polaroid pictures during sessions so they still have images to use
  • Over about two months, each patient finishes a full scrapbook

Behind the scenes

  • Coordinate with hospice staff on patient access and safety rules, like keeping scissors with volunteers only
  • Bought all of the scrapbooking supplies out of pocket
  • Co-lead every on-site session

What’s next

Next, I want to expand Memory Connections to more patients and more facilities.
